My biggest requirement would be a rust free car

I can turn wrenches on everything else. That looks like a really nice choice!

First step: try to find a factory or similar service manual. Chiltons and Haynes suck, but they are better than nothing. Probably not a bad idea to invest in a torque wrench, along with your metric tools. Get your son to understand why you torque bolts.

Do your research on weak points, and address those first.

Unless it's documented, would replace all rubber bits, from belts to hoses. Talking about water, fuel, and brake lines. I would also replace the thermostat. I would put a new water pump on the shelf. Replace when it starts to fail, or before you take a long road trip.

Replacing fluids is a "no brainer." Engine, transmission, and differential oil, and brake fluid. Make sure you know if you have an open or LSD. "Clutch type" LSDs require an additional lubricant additive.

Check the ball joints, rubber bushings, and other wear points in the suspension. A little wear is not an emergency. You can get to that when you have time. But worn ball joints may give you irregular tire wear, or worse if it fails.

Not sure if Alfa was using points and condensers then, so replace them with an electronic plug in module. It makes the car much easier car to drive on a daily basis.

Don't forget to look at the tires. If they're several decades old, replace them...including the spare.

As for other wear items, like shocks. Replace when needed.

Make sure you son knows is if there is an issue like overheating, a $60 wrecker is much cheaper than a blown head gasket.

Have a blast!
